The VW T-Cross is an FWD-only SUV. It is based on the MQB-A0 platform.

The MQB A0 IN platform-based VW SUV India will get in 2020 will share only components, and not looks with the VW T-Cross. Its relevance to the Chinese-spec version is higher, as both may share the longer wheelbase. Growth of approximately 90 mm (from 2,563 mm) is expected for increased comfort.

Belonging to the same segment as the VW Polo, the VW T-Cross continues the German automaker’s SUV offensive that began with the latest VW Tiguan in 2016. It will go against the likes of Seat Arona, Peugeot 208 and Hyundai Kona as well as the Skoda Polar (TBA) due next year.

Volkswagen will offer the T-Cross with four turbocharged engine options: 95 PS 1.0-litre TSI petrol, 115 PS 1.0-litre TSI petrol, 150 PS 1.5-litre TSI Evo petrol and 95 PS 1.6-litre TDI diesel. There’s no 4MOTION AWD option for this entry-level model.

LED headlights, 18-inch alloy wheels, LED tail lights, two-colour dash pads, Beats sound system, Active Info Display virtual instrument cluster, 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system, four USB ports (two at the front, two at the rear) and wireless smartphone charging are some of the salient features of the VW T-Cross.

The Volkswagen Group will not curb SUV lengths to under 4,000 mm just because doing so would attract lower GST in India. Sub-4 metre SUVs are “cheap”, according to Skoda CFO Klaus-Dieter Schurmann (Skoda is leading the MQB A0 IN project). So, the first locally manufactured VW SUV arriving here by 2021 will compete with premium B-SUVs like the Hyundai Creta and the Renault Duster.
