When BMW first announced the new 3 Series late in 2011, a certain section of people were awaiting the news of the 3 Series Coupe/Cabriolet. However, BMW had planned something different though.
The BMW 4 Series Coupe (called as the Concept 4 Series still), was unveiled to the world in North American Motor Show, just about a month ago. The Bavarian's plan was very clear: The 3 Series Coupe/Cabrio would come under the 4 Series badge. This way, all the odd-numbered cars would be sedans while the even numbered (upcoming 2, 4 and 6) would be coupes/gran coupes/convertibles.
This sort of positioning has plenty of advantages for BMW. For one, they can charge you more as a 4 Series would appear to be more premium and upmarket than the 3 Series. The next reason is a major one. With the introduction of a new model, a series of new cars could be developed on that platform. Which is what BMW intends to do.
In the days to come, you can expect the German to announce the 4 Series convertible, the M version of the coupe and convertible, a possible 4 Series Gran Coupe and a M version of that Gran Coupe as well.
Today, however, we will update you on the possible production date and the various engine options BMW have planned for the car.
The information comes from a leaked official document of BMW. First of all, the 4 Series is expected to be joined by its convertible sibling very soon. BMW would start making the 4 Series Coupe in their Munich facility this July.
The 4 Series Coupe which has been internally coded as the F32 is expected to offer the following engine options:
- 428i and 428xi (all-wheel drive) powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged petrol inline four delivering 240bhp
- 435i and 435xi powered a 3.0-liter turbocharged petrol inline-six with 300hp
The Convertible version has been internally coded as the F33 and will only offer rear wheel drive. The engine options and the power outputs are expected to be the same as the coupe.
Production of the convertible will commence at BMW's Regensburg facility in November of 2013.
If the report is indeed true, expect BMW to show the 4 Series Convertible at the upcoming Frankfurt Motor Show.
