BMW Motorrad to make an entry-level dual-purpose motorcycle.

BMW Motorrad announced its first sub-500 cc motorcycle - the BMW G310R, this year. It's yet to be launched in India, but BMW Motorrad is already working on another product for India, as per a report from Autocar India. The report cites a senior BMW official based outside India, among others.

The BMW G310 GS would be built in India, given that it will be a derivative of the BMW G310R.

According to the report, the German automaker's two-wheeler division is readying a mini GS, which will be a dual-purpose version of the BMW G310R. The new adventure motorcycle could be named BMW G310 GS. The entry-level dual-purpose motorcycle class is still a niche in India, with offerings limited to the Hero Impulse and the Royal Enfield Himalayan, but BMW Motorrad is seeing potential in the space.

Being a balanced on-road and off-road motorcycle, the BMW G310 GS can be expected to have a more robust construction and many other differences such as a specially-developed suspension, on/off-road tyres, spoked wheels etc., compared to the BMW G310R for a go-anywhere characteristic. The heart of the G310 GS, however, will be the same 313 cc liquid-coold single-cylinder engine of G310R, perhaps in a different tuning.

The BMW G310 GS, when launched, could have the Royal Enfield Himalayan as its closest competitor. Like the G310R, TVS Motor Company's Hosur plant could produce the adventure two-wheeler for local and global markets.
