Spotted during cold weather testing in Lapland.

Likely to make an appearance at the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show in September, the 2016 Audi A4 has been spotted undergoing extreme weather testing in Lapland, reports WorldCarFans. The test mule might be camouflaged but still gives away a lot of upcoming features on the vehicle.

Audi A4 Sport Edition
The 2016 Audi A4 is expected to be lighter by up to 100 kg (Current A4 image used for representation).

To start with, it gets the Singleframe grille up front, which is slowly making its presence on new Audis. The headlamps could be pre-production units, with LED DRLs yet to be fitted, but they look sleeker than the current A4's units. At the sides, the rear view mirror comes mounted on the door (and not on the A-pillar). At the rear, the version spotted had two tail pipes and what appeared like a bootlid spoiler. The taillamps look like pre-production examples, too.

Like the recently unveiled 2016 Audi Q7 and the upcoming 2017 Audi A6, the next generation A4 will be based on Volkswagen's MLB Evo platform. It's expected to shed as much as 100 kg, thanks to the use of high strenth steel and aluminium in its construction. Engine options are likely to be carried over, with a new plug-in hybrid setup combining the 2-litre TFSI engine and a 95 hp electric motor, adds the report.

While it's likely to be introduced in the market this year in Europe, global sales could begin next year, followed soon by the Indian launch before mid-2016.
