It's no news that Mahindra has been working on a new-generation Thar for quite some time now. Recently, the 2020 Thar soft-top was spotted in parking, in what was one of the many test mule sightings that have surfaced on the web so far.

The next-gen Mahindra Thar should have better on-road manners and offer more practicality.

From the various test mule sightings till date, it has become obvious that the Mahindra Thar will carry evolutionary updates and will transform into a more roadworthy vehicle in comparison. This transition will help the company to make it more appealing as a daily driver.

In terms of overall dimensions, the next-gen Thar has grown slightly bigger and more muscular which is very much apparent even from its camouflage form. Outside, it will retain all the classical design elements such as signature seven-slot vertical grille, front fender-mounted turn indicators, a wide and flat bonnet and round halogen headlamps, side-hinged tailgate with a spare wheel and vertical brick-shaped combination lamps. The greater changes will be reserved for the interiors, as seen in the previous spy shots. There'll be a completely new cabin layout for more comfort and convenience. Speaking of which, it will feature a completely redesigned all-black dashboard, a new instrument panel with a MID integrated flanking the dials, a multi-function steering wheel, round AC vents, new AC control dials with silver outline and also a new repositioned passenger grab-handle. Apart from this, one of the biggest changes in the new model will be the use of front-facing rear seats, offering more comfort and safety to the rear-passengers.

The 2020 Mahindra Thar will have on a more robust construction and will obviously pass the active BNVSAP crash tests and hence will be safer than the last-gen model. It will be packed with all the regular safety features such as driver airbag, rear parking sensors, speed alert system and more as standard.

Under the hood, the 2020 Mahindra Thar will use a newly developed BS-VI 2.0-litre diesel engine rated to deliver 140 PS of maximum power and 300 Nm of peak torque. The engine will work in conjunction with a 6-speed manual transmission. A shift-on-fly 4WD system is expected as an option.
