One of the most highly anticipated four-wheeler launches for 2020 among auto enthusiasts is the next-gen Mahindra Thar. Spy media and media reports have continued giving out new details months before the official debut at Auto Expo 2020.

The next-gen Mahindra Thar will be a more polished vehicle suited as a daily driver as well. Here are the top 5 things to expect from the next-gen model.

Substantially more powerful diesel engine

Currently, the Mahindra Thar is available with a 105 PS 2.5-litre diesel engine (105 PS/247 Nm) coupled to a 5-speed manual gearbox. With the full model change, it will trade this engine with a 2.2-litre diesel engine from the Scorpio and TUV300 Plus, with a maximum power output of 140 PS and a peak torque output of 300 Nm on tap.

In addition, considering the huge popularity of petrol engines in recent times, the Mahindra Thar might also get a petrol engine as an option. This unit is highly likely to be the same 2.2-litre four-cylinder unit from the Mahindra XUV500 (140 PS/320 Nm). For the first time, there might be an automatic gearbox option.

Hardtop version

The current generation Mahindra Thar feels somewhat utilitarian with its standard soft top. However, that might change with the new generation model, as the spy pictures of test mules suggest that there will be an option for a factory fitted hardtop for the very first time. This would mean greater safety and security too.

Notably bigger

The spy pictures also indicate one thing clearly that it is going to be slightly bigger and visually different vehicle than before. The exterior design won't be much different, though. The 2020 Mahindra Thar appears to be wider, which makes it look boxier and should translate into more cabin space.

More comfort

Reports say that the 2020 Mahindra Thar will feature bucket seats for the front passengers. For the passengers in the rear, there will be front-facing seats instead of side-facing seats. The revamped front suspension and the new, independent rear suspension should enhance the on-road manners.

Technologically more advanced

Lastly, the next-gen Mahindra Thar will be more technologically advanced. Expect features like an MID, touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, reverse parking camera, LED tail lights and more. This will make it more compelling for younger buyers.
