BMW is working on an entry-level 4-door GranCoupe based on the next generation 2 Series. While the first spy media of its test prototype emerged this week, Autobild has created a speculative rendering of the Mercedes CLA rival.
The 2 Series GranCoupe is expected to be approximately 4.5 meters long, which is more or less the same length as the current family-oriented 2-Series Gran Tourer. Autobild's sources say that the front fascia will look particularly striking and reminiscent of the legendary 2002. Unlike the 4 Series GranCoupe, the 2 Series GranCoupe will be based on the FWD UKL platform, which will also underpin the next-gen 2 Series Coupe and Cabrio.
The engine lineup could comprise of three-cylinder and four-cylinder TwinPower motors displacing 1.5L and 2.0L, respectively. The range-topper is likely to be a M35i variant with a 2.0L turbo engine that makes 252 hp. There will not be any six-cylinder engine options. BMW’s X Drive AWD system could be available as an option on select models.
The new 2 Series GranCoupe will slot between the BMW 1 Series sedan and 3 Series. Like the upcoming BMW X2, it will bank on style and persona to attract buyers. The 2 Series GranCoupe will go up against the next-gen Mercedes CLA when it arrives in 2020.
