Ahead of its launch, a pre-production test unit has been caught in Chennai by our reader Mohamed Shahid Hussain, featuring less camouflage than before. It sports the final production-spec headlamps, sleek grille, and a clamshell hood. The exterior of the upcoming S101 is anything but boxy, unlike its cousin, the Mahindra TUV300.

Under the hood, the diesel option is likely be the new mHawk 80 three-cylinder 1.5-liter engine, while an all new 1.2-liter petrol engine co-developed with Ssangyong is confirmed to make its debut in the S101. Transmission options include a 5-speed manual and automated manual transmissions (AMT), which will transfer power to the front axle only.

The Mahindra S101 will slot in the sub-compact hatchback segment, which accounts for 43 percent of the total passenger vehicle market (sales data from April-July 2015) in India. With a new petrol engine under the hood, it also widens its target audience, as 65 percent of the cars in its segment are petrol-powered.
