Seeing the high popularity of SUVs, Volkswagen India has decided to bring in the VW Tiguan first. The compact SUV will go on sale reportedly in April 2017. It was showcased with the 132 kW (180 PS) 2.0-litre TSI petrol engine at Auto Expo 2016, but the commercially available version will pack a 2.0-litre diesel engine tuned to produce 177 hp and 350 Nm of torque. However, like the version seen at Auto Expo 2016, the Tiguan will have a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission and an all-wheel-drive system.
After a safe gap to avoid cannibalisation, the German automaker will launch the VW Passat in India in July 2017. The mid-size sedan was showcased in its GTE plug-in hybrid variant at Auto Expo 2016, but at launch, it will have the EA288 177 hp 2.0-litre diesel engine under the hood. However, the VW Passat GTE is still on the cards and may arrive at a later date.

Despite local assembly, the VW Tiguan and VW Passat will likely have a steep pricing in India. The former is expected to start at INR 30 lakh (ex-showroom). The VW Passat, which will rival the Toyota Camry and Skoda Superb, is expected to retail at around INR 27 lakh (ex-showroom).
