India’s most beloved Hyundai, the i10, is all set to enter its second generation.
Launched in 2007, the i10 is one of the most brilliant small cars on the Indian market. At one given point of time, it was the third bestselling car in India giving the Maruti Wagon R nightmares.
But it has been over five years since the i10 hit the market and following the mid-life facelift in 2010, it is about time for an all-new model. Hyundai India has been working day-in and day-out to develop the next generation i10.
Codenamed BA, the new i10 is definitely going to grow in size. There are rumors that Hyundai will sell the BA as the i15 in India alongside the current i10 (like the Korean automaker did for Accent and Verna).
The all-new i10 is going to be a very important car for Hyundai. The Korean automaker is benchmarking it against the VW Up! which won the coveted World Car of the Year award in 2012. Superior build quality and clever packaging was always the i10’s strengths. Now, the Koreans are trying to outsmart the Germans at their own game.
The 2014 i10 will feature a new iteration of the ‘Fluidic sculpture’ design language. It could feature the ‘Storm Edge’ design philosophy that debuted on the all-new Santa Fe. The interior styling will be borrowed from the new i30.
With the launch of the Eon, Hyundai needs to push the i10 further upmarket. We are expecting some clever features, a roomier interior and better crash safety ratings. A 1-liter Kappa engine, alongside the current 1.2L Kappa may be a part of the powertrain range. Looking at the increased favoritism towards diesel cars, Hyundai has developed a new 1.1L CRDI turbo diesel with variable geometry turbo for the new i10.
The new i10 is set to make its world premiere at the Frankfurt Motor Show this September. It will head to production at Hyundai’s Chennai facility and will be on sale in India by late 2013 or early 2014.
