Maruti Suzuki will launch the CNG variant of the Maruti Celerio next month, adding to the Alto 800, Wagon R, Eeco and the Ertiga.

A report on Motorbeam says that the CNG unit will work in tandem with the petrol engine. The Celerio was launched at the Auto Expo 2014 with a 1.0-liter petrol engine that makes 68 hp. The Celerio, in its petrol avatar, returns an ARAI certified mileage of 23.1 kmpl. This figure should rise with the CNG kit fitted in.

For the all CNG variants, the company uses a CNG unit it calls the i-GPI. The unit injects CNG into the combustion chamber of the engine when on the dual mode and allows the driver to shift from pure CNG mode to pure petrol mode. In order to change the vehicle to run on CNG, Maruti will - like in the Wagon R - change the suspension settings of the Celerio to account for the cylinder weight and use special material valve seats in the engine.

The report also says that the CNG variant will be restricted to the VXi manual variant of the Celerio.

While the AMT version is the most popular amongst Celerio buyers, the report suggests that only the manual variant will get the CNG option.

Maruti is also in the process of giving the Celerio a diesel engine, with reports stating that the 800 cc turbocharged diesel engine it is developing for the Y9T will make to the hatchback this fiscal.
