Truck and bus manufacturer Eicher is looking to create a new segment in personal mobility, the company's MD and CEO Siddhartha Lal has said. The new venture would be to create a new segment in "personal four wheel space," a report on the New Indian Express quotes Lal.
The new vehicle could be Eicher's answer to the Bajaj U-Car, which made its global debut at the recently concluded Auto Expo 2014. Even though Bajaj maintains that the U-Car is just at a concept stage and that the production decision would depend on public response, officials at the stall told IAB that the car is already under development, based on a new platform.
The U-Car is a two-seater four-wheeled personal mobility vehicle along the lines of the Renault Twizy. It will be powered by a liquid cooled, four-valve, triple-spark, fuel injected engine. The light weight vehicle features an automatic gearbox and an air conditioner. It is likely to get the same 216 cc engine that does duty on the Bajaj Pulsar 220. The same engine, it was revealed, would also power the Bajaj RE60.
Internationally, the Renault Twizy is an electric-vehicle for two, marketed as an urban commuter vehicle. It gets a range of 100 km and takes 3.5 hours to charge fully.
