Bajaj Auto and KTM will introduce a range of performance electric two-wheelers by 2022, reports Moneycontrol. The business website also adds that Bajaj Auto will increase its stake in the Austrian two-wheeler brand. The company may also launch electric cycles in our market. The co-developed performance electric bikes won't be sold via the Bajaj Auto's upcoming Bajaj Urbanite brand.
Speaking about the upcoming electric-powered motorcycles, KTM Industries AG said:
In June, KTM Industries and Bajaj Auto decided to launch a development project series for powered two-wheeler electric vehicles in the performance range three and 10 kW (48 V) at the KTM AG level. The platform will support various product variants -- powered two-wheelers and electric bicycles -- under both partners' brands.
The upcoming electric motorcycles will be produced at Bajaj Chakan plant. KTM Industries AG added:
Production of the series will begin by 2022 at Bajaj’s production location in Pune. The required (product) development budget is covered in the medium term planning. This will represent a significant step in strengthening its cooperation with Bajaj.
The upcoming electric range of products from the Indo-Austrian partnership will benefit from KTM’s existing experience in the field of electric motorcycles and Bajaj Auto’s efficient manufacturing setup. Local manufacturing will also bring FAME-II subsidy along with the lower GST rates and tax benefits. KTM’s current electric portfolio comprises just one product – the FREERIDE E-XC off-roader that features wire-spoke wheels with knobby tyres, long-travel suspension and tall ground clearance.
In the short term, KTM will expand its India portfolio with the launch of the new 790 Duke by next month. The highest displacement KTM naked roadster has started to reach dealerships in the country, and the unofficial bookings for the motorcycle have already commenced. Apart from the 790 Duke, the upcoming list of products for the Indian market include the Husqvarna Vitpilen 401, Svartpilen 401 and the much-awaited 390 Adventure.
The KTM 390 Adventure, which was spotted on various occasions being tested, will most likely debut at the 2019 EICMA motorcycle show in Milan, Italy. Meanwhile, a report from last month claimed that there will be a 250 cc version powered by the KTM 250 Duke's engine as well.
