Bajaj Chetak was once the largest selling two-wheeler in the country.
The iconic Bajaj Chetak brand name is being rumoured to make a comeback. Patent images of its body parts have surfaced online, courtesy of MotorOctane.
Interestingly, Rajiv Bajaj, Managing Director, of Bajaj Auto, has been consistently denying reports of Bajaj heading back towards the scooter business. In fact, he added recently that Bajaj will head to the scooter business only when they have something unique.
The patent images, if they are of an upcoming Bajaj Chetak model, reveal a retro-modern look inspired by Vespa. This will make the scooter a premium offering helping Bajaj rake in better returns. The absence of disc brake, at least in the front, is a surprise but there is a possibility that it will be offered as an option.
Unlike the Bajaj chetak of the yesteryears, the new Chetak will have an automatic gearbox. Powertrain details too are scarce and considering the competition, it would not be a huge surprise if Bajaj offers the Chetak with a 125 cc mill.
The Bajaj Chetak, if a reality, can be expected to make a comeback in 2018.
