The 2020 Mahindra Thar has been spied on several occasions by now. Using the design bits uncovered by the test mules, IAB’s digital artist Shoeb Kalania has created a rendering to show how the next-gen model's rear-end would look like.
The 2020 Mahindra Thar's design will be more of an evolutionary one. The rear of the rendered next-gen Thar features a spare wheel bolted on to the side-hinged tailgate. The vertical brick-shaped tail lights are comparatively smaller, but gel well with the overall shape of the rear-end. Also, the black hard-top roof gives a dual-tone look on its light body colour. The increase in the width is clearly visible which is especially highlighted from the wheel arches cladding which adds muscularity to the boxy lifestyle vehicle's body.
At the front, expect the all-new Thar to feature seven-slot vertical front grille flanked by round headlights as seen on the original model, a feature inspired by the CJB3. It will also have other design elements borrowed from the current model such as front-fender-mounted turn indicators and an upright windscreen. It may not feature LED headlights and use halogen lights instead, in order to keep the costs in check.
The next-gen model will also have a more robust construction and design in order to pass the stringent BNVSAP crash test norms coming in action from 1 October 2019, something that the outgoing model lacks. Also, it will be equipped with all the safety features such as driver airbag, rear parking sensors, speed alert system and more which will be made mandatory under AIS 145 safety norms that come into effect on 1 July 2019.
Interior spy shots suggest that the all-new Mahindra Thar will be equipped with a multi-function steering wheel. It will also have a new big MID placed between the instrument dials. Also, there is a provision for an infotainment system, the central AC vents are round just like on the outgoing model. The seats will have an all-black colouring theme with contrast stitching. Overall, it will have a more modern and comfortable interior compared to the old Mahindra Thar.

The new generation Mahindra Thar will sit on an updated ladder-frame chassis which will also underping the 2020 Mahindra Scorpio. Under the hood, it will have an all-new 2.0-litre diesel engine which is said to deliver 140 PS of maximum power and a peak torque of 300 Nm. The transmission duties will be undertaken by a 6-speed manual gearbox.
The 2020 Mahindra Thar could debut at Auto Expo 2020.
