Launched in February 2014, the Maruti Celerio has been a popular option in the A2-segment (avg. monthly sale from Sept 2018-Feb 2019 - 8,115 units). It received a mid-cycle facelift in October 2017 and a crossover-inspired Celerio X variant in December 2017. In the latest development, it has received a new set of standard safety features to comply with the upcoming more stringent safety norms.
Reportedly, the 2019 Maruti Celerio will be sold in a price range of INR 4.39-5.56 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi), which will make it up to INR 18,000 costlier than before. With the introduction of the latest set of updates, all the variants of the company's Tata Tiago and Hyundai Santro rival will come equipped with ABS, dual front airbags, a speed warning system, front seatbelt reminder (SBR) and reverse parking sensors. In July 2018, Maruti Suzuki announced that nine out of its fifteen models, including the Celerio, already comply with the updated full-frontal impact, off-set-frontal impact and side impact crash test norms that will come into play in October 2019.
The Maruti Celerio continues to be powered by the K10B 1.0-litre three-cylinder petrol engine that produces 50 kW (67.02 hp) of maximum power and 90 Nm of peak torque. The small car is available with a petrol-CNG engine that offers 43.5 kW (58.31 hp) of power and 78 Nm of torque as well. While both the fuel variants are available with a 5-speed manual transmission, the former can be even bought with a 5-speed automated manual transmission optionally.
As per a report that surfaced in January 2019, the company will launch the second generation Maruti Celerio (codename: Maruti YNC) in the second half of 2020. The new model is likely to be underpinned by the fifth generation Heartect platform that will result in improvements in crash safety and vehicle dynamics. The all-new model will even have a stronger structure and will comply with the new pedestrian crash safety norms that come into effect next year.
