The VW T-Cross is the production version of the VW T-Cross Breeze concept. Unlike the 2-door convertible concept, its production version is a conventional 5-door SUV with a fixed roof. Internally referred to as the VW216, the VW T-Cross appears to have a boxy body for a traditional SUV styling, much like its rival Jeep Renegade.

The VW T-Cross is underpinned by the MQB A0 platform currently utilised by the VW Polo, VW Virtus, Seat Ibiza and Seat Arona. Volkswagen could offer it with a variety of small engines, including the 95 PS 1.0L TSI, 110 PS 1.6L MPI, 115 PS 1.0L TSI, 150 PS TSI petrol units, the 90 PS 1.0L TSI petrol-CNG unit and the 95 PS 1.6L TDI and 115 PS 1.6L TDI diesel units. Transmission choices may include 5-speed manual, 6-speed manual, 6-speed automatic and 7-speed DSG dual-clutch automatic. Volkswagen may keep its baby SUV devoid of the 4MOTION AWD system.

Volkswagen is yet to make an announcement, but reports say that the VW T-Cross will debut in H2 2018. Its production for Europe will take place at the Volkswagen Navarra plant in Spain, beginning in January 2019. In Brazil, Volkswagen will offer the T-Cross with 120 PS 1.6-litre MSI and 128 PS 1.0-litre TSI engines and 5-speed manual and 6-speed automatic transmissions. Production will take place at the Sao Jose dos Pinhais plant.
