At the 2016 Geneva Motor Show, Volkswagen introduced the VW T-Cross Breeze concept. Now the company has started testing the concept’s production version, spy shot published by Autoesporte has revealed.
The VW T-Cross Breeze concept was a 2-door convertible SUV. Its production version is a conventional 5-door SUV with a fixed roof. The spy shot suggests that the production version won’t look as sporty as the VW T-Roc, which has a coupe-like roof section.
The VW T-Cross will share the MQB A0 platform with the sixth-gen VW Polo. In Europe, Volkswagen could offer the VW T-Cross exclusively with turbocharged engines, a strategy already applied for the VW T-Roc. It’s natural to expect the 1.0-litre TSI petrol, 1.5-litre TSI petrol and 1.6-litre TDI diesel engines from the Polo. However, German media reports suggest that Volkswagen will offer a 1.4-litre TDI diesel engine, not a 1.6-litre diesel engine in the T-Cross. The company may limit the 4MOTION AWD system’s availability to range-topping configurations, with basic configurations settling for FWD drivetrain layout.

The VW T-Cross will arrive sometime in 2018. VW India's management has confirmed that it is studying the T-Cross as a potential Hyundai Creta rival. In addition to the VW T-Cross, Volkswagen is planning a Skoda Karoq-based compact SUV named VW Tharu for Latin America and China. This model will compete with the Jeep Compass.
