Brett Borgard, a Carscoops reader, snapped these images of the next generation 2016 BMW X6 while it was testing in Colorado, USA. It has certainly taken us some time to identify the silver test mule as an X6, as BMW is simultaneously testing out the new X4. Needless to say, both these SUVs look quite similar when seen with camouflage.
The X6 was launched internationally in 2008 (and a year later in India) and a mid-life refresh rolled out in India in the later part of 2012. The SAV (BMWs term for Sports Activity Vehicle) is set to get a successor in the second half of the year, and based on these spy images, the second generation X6 looks very similar to the current model.
A recent rendering by a European magazine suggested something similar wherein the next generation model's design was seen as an evolution rather than something radical.
The X6 for India is imported into the country via the CBU (Completely Built up Unit) route from BMWs South Carolina plant. India gets the X6 in a single specification - xDrive40d - which is priced at nearly INR 1 crore ex-Showroom, New Delhi. Power comes from a twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter six-cylinder diesel engine which produces 306 hp and 600 Nm of torque, accelerating the X6 from 0-100 km/h in 6.5 seconds.
While BMW is already readying the second generation X6, rivals Mercedes and Audi are yet to come out with their answers for this segment.
