Both are scheduled for launch this year
Hyundai's two most awaited models - the ix25 compact SUV and i20 cross - were spotted testing by an NDTV Autos reader in Chennai. Both pre-production prototypes are recognizably disguised, suggesting that they're closing in on their production commencement dates.
First unveiled at the 2014 Chengdu Motor Show, the ix25 compact SUV is one of Hyundai India's most important models to break cover. With interest on compact SUVs growing rapidly in the Indian market, it would only seem wise for the Korean brand to bank on the interest with the ix25.
The ix25's design draws inspiration from Hyundai's latest Fluidic Sculpture 2.0 that also influences the Elite i20, and the Santa Fe SUV. Its length is a tad more than 4 meters, putting it in the segment that includes the Renault Duster and Nissan Terrano. Top variants are expected to feature LED DRLs with projector headlamps, panoramic sunroof, and large 5-spoke alloy rims (featured in the spyshot).
Under the hood, the ix25 will come with an engine lineup that may include engines sourced from the Verna: a 105.5 bhp 1.4 liter VTVT petrol and a 88.7 bhp 1.4 liter U2 diesel engines. Engines will be paired to a 6-speed manual or automatic gearbox, that will drive the front wheels only.
Also spotted is the rugged, beefed-up version of the Elite i20 that will have a slightly raised ride height, tough body cladding, new alloy rim designs, a pair of roof rails, projector headlamps and rear disc brake.
It's likely to not differ in powertrain options to the Elite i20, which gets a 88.7 bhp 1.4-liter U2 diesel engine and a 82 bhp 1.2-liter VTVT petrol motor. Both engines will be paired to a 5-speed manual gearbox.

To keep the prices very competitive, HMIL has promised that both products will have 90% localization. Both the ix25 and the i20 crossover will be revealed this year, though they haven't revealed a specific date.
