BMW India today launched the 2014 BMW X5 at an all-India ex-Showroom price of INR 70.9 lakhs.
The third generation X5 went on sale in European markets towards the later half of last year, with four-, six- and eight-cylinder engines. The variant for India is available only with a six-cylinder diesel engine in the xDrive30d spec.
On the outside, the new X5 may resemble the older model, but is based on a completely new platform. The headlights and the kidney grille have been designed to look larger, and are key design elements on BMW SUVs. The new X5 measures 4,886 mm in length, 2,184 mm in width, 1,762 mm in height and 2,933 mm in wheelbase.
Power for the new X5 in India comes from the in-line six-cylinder 3.0-liter diesel engine, which is also seen under the hood of the 530d M Sport, 640d and 730 Ld. This engine produces 258 hp at 4,000 rpm and 560 Nm of torque between 1,500-3,000 rpm and sends power to all four wheels using an 8-speed automatic transmission. It enables the SUV to accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 6.9 seconds and achieve a top-speed of 230 km/h.
Unlike the previous generation X5 which was brought in as an imported vehicle, the 2014 X5 is assembled at BMW India's plant from CKD (Completely Knocked Down) kits shipped by BMWs Spartanburg plant in the United States.
