While the Ray is targeted at the female riders, its sportier iteration attempts to lure boys. Just by introducing new color options, adding decals, offering carbon fibre themed instrument background and the seat cover, and by changing the grab rail, Yamaha has managed to make the Ray Z look much more appealing to male audience.
Under the skin, there is absolutely no difference between the Ray and the Ray Z. The automatic scooter is powered by a 113cc air cooled 4-stroke engine paired with a CVT. The motor generates 7.1 bhp of power and 8.1 Nm of torque.
The advertisement campaign for the Ray Z has a tagline, "Your Next Bro" which connects well with the target audience who are mainly boys in the last two years of their school lives.
Yamaha says that the Indian two wheeler market has surpassed that of China with the scooter market showing good promise. This is the reason why the Japanese bigwig, who was known for its performance bikes, decided to concentrate more on scooters.
The company is setting up a scooter manufacturing plant in Chennai which is expected to go on stream later this year. The plant will ensure speedy delivery of the scooters in the southern region of the country.
