While the updates are mostly cosmetic, Volvo claims that it is the most comprehensive upgrade to existing models in the company’s history. The changes can be summarized as follows –
- LED DRLs in the front bumper
- Slightly redesigned grille with chrome accents
- Restyled headlamps and taillamps
Volvo has also added a few tech features to the whole lineup such as –
- Sensus Connected Touch
- Adaptive Digital Display
- Ambient Light
- Pedestrian Detection
- Road Sign Information
Nothing has been redone mechanically to any of these models.
It is worth noting that the XC90 and the V40 do not feature these updates. While the V40 was launched just last year, the XC90 will be discontinued next year. An all-new successor is planned for 2014 which will be the SUV flagship model in the Volvo lineup.
The aim is to launch 9 new models (and refreshes) by 2015. Many new models will be developed using Volvo’s technologies (Volvo Environment Architecture four-cylinder engines) and platform (Scalable Platform Architecture) and not Ford’s EUCD platform, Duratorq and Ecoboost technologies as the case is right now.
Geely, the current owners of Volvo, is aiding the Swedish automaker both financially and R&D wise to realize a Ford-free future. Together, they have set up a new R&D center in Sweden to develop a modular architecture that will underpin future Volvo C segment cars.
