Piaggio has announced that it would launch the Vespa 946, the premium 125 cc scooter, within 2-3 months in India.
The company's chairman and managing director, Ravi Chopra, in an interview to Business Standard said that the homologation process for the Vespa 946 is done and that it would be launched as a collector's edition. The scooter is set to priced well above any of the current offerings that Piaggio has in India.
The 946 is a premium offering even in its hometown, thanks to the scooter being hand built and having a limited annual production run. The scooter gets a fuel-injected version of the same 125 cc engine that powers the Vespa 125 in India. For the 946, the engine makes 11.6 hp.
The 946 has a fully digital speedometer cluster, disc brakes at both ends, ABS, ASR, traction control, chrome garnished exhaust, engine cover with grills and reflectors. It adopts the classic round headlamps.
Vespa had recently launched the 125 cc Vespa S, featuring rectangular headlamps and twin analog instrument cluster. The vehicle is also priced at a premium compared to its competition at Rs 75,424 (Ex-showroom, New Delhi). The scooter makes 9.9 bhp power, which is a little bit more than other 125 cc scooters like the Suzuki Swish (8.58 hp), Suzuki Access (8.58 hp) and the upcoming Honda Activa 125 (8.6 hp).
