The Tata Harrier is in the final stages of development now. YouTube user crazy abir has shared a spy video of two prototypes en route to Haridwar during road testing.

The Tata Harrier is one of the many new premium products arriving under the new initiative named ‘Turnaround 2.0’. The highly anticipated premium SUV was previewed by the Tata H5X concept at Auto Expo 2018. It is the first production model to incorporate the IMPACT 2.0 design language, because of which it looks nothing like any other Tata Motors product built to the date.

Tata Motors will offer the Harrier with only a 2.0-litre diesel engine coupled to a 6-speed MT at launch, but a 6-speed AT option will follow.

The Tata Harrier sits on a repurposed Jaguar Land Rover-developed D8 platform. While the chassis comes from the British luxury automaker, the engine is a work of the Italo-American automaker FCA. Called ‘Kryotec’, it’s basically the 140 PS version of the 2.0-litre MultiJet II diesel engine. In the Jeep Renegade and Fiat 500X available internationally, this engine delivers a maximum torque of 350 Nm - the same as in the 170 PS version of the Jeep Compass.

At launch, Tata Motors will offer the Harrier with only the 2.0-litre diesel engine coupled to a 6-speed manual transmission. Later, however, a 6-speed automatic transmission option will follow. The company will offer this optional transmission in the 7-seat version (Tata H7X) first, though. An AWD system is not planned for the five-seater monocoque SUV, and so, all configurations will have a FWD drivetrain layout.

The officially disclosed launch timeline is early 2019, and reports speak of January as the month locked for the market introduction of the Tata Harrier.
