The 1L engine would be an adaptation of the current 0.8L unit.
According to a report on the Economic Times, Renault India will showcase two new variants on the Kwid at the forthcoming Auto Expo 2016, scheduled to take place in Greater Noida from the first week of February 2016. The variants in question include the more powerful 1.0-liter variant of the Kwid and the Kwid fitted with an AMT (automated manual transmission).
Renault India confirmed that it would launch these variants on the small car, however, did not put a timeframe to the launch. Speaking to IndianAutosBlog at the Kwid's world premiere in Chennai, Mr. Gerard Detourbet, Alliance Global Vice President, Alliance A-Segment Development Unit, said that an "evolution" of the Kwid's all-new 800cc three-cylinder engine will be seen. He also confirmed development plans for the AMT.
While the Renault Kwid currently targets the Maruti Alto 800 and the Hyundai Eon, the Kwid 1L and Kwid AMT will rival the Maruti Alto K10 and K10 AMT respectively. A recent report stated that the Kwid 1L will be equipped with ABS and dual front airbags as well. Presently, a driver airbag is optional on the top-end variant of the Kwid though ABS is unavailable.
Renault India is also working on ramping up production of the Kwid in the coming 3-6 months. Having received over 75,000 bookings, the car maker plans on producing around 10,000 units of the small car at its Chennai plant.
