Reported to develop 57 bhp.
EVO India has shared the first images of Renault's all-new 800 cc three-cylinder petrol engine. Codenamed BR-8, this unit is confirmed to make its presence on the Renault Kwid, which is announced to launch in the 'festive season' period of this year in India.
The publication has also shared details that this all-aluminium engine is 'super compact', and will come matched to a 5-speed manual and automated manual transmission. Other details shared by Renault, during the world premiere of the Kwid in Chennai last month, are that this unit will provide the Kwid with high fuel efficiency "among the best in India", and that it's a very "simple" engine, with no high-tech features.
Reports state that this engine will develop 57 bhp on the Alto-rival, making the Kwid the most powerful in its class (the Alto 800 develops 47.32 bhp and the Eon 0.8 puts out 55.2 bhp). Renault developed this engine from the ground up, and according to engineering boss Gerard Detourbet, about half of the car’s development cost was absorbed by the engine.
The Kwid will also be the first product to be based on the CMF-A modular architecture. According to Renault India, about 98 percent of the car is localized, one of the reasons for Renault to promise an aggressive price of between INR 3-4 lakhs.
