Maruti-Suzuki's first self-developed diesel engine will be a 792 cc unit, reports Gaadi.com. The engine, which is believed to be a two-cylinder unit, has been developed by Suzuki in Japan with inputs coming from Maruti engineers in India.
This new diesel engine will first be seen on an LCV codenamed Y9T. The Tata Ace-rivaling LCV, reported to be based on the Suzuki Carry's platform, will launch by early 2015 in India. The highlight of this small engine is that it will come with turbocharging technology, whereas the Ace EX and Mahindra Maxximo, two possible rivals to the Y9T, don't feature this technology.
It was revealed last month that the turbocharger will be manufactured by Turbo Energy Limited (TEL), a joint venture between Brakes India and BorgWarner Turbo Systems. The turbocharger used by the Maruti engine would be the smallest in the BorgWarner family.
Gaadi further says that the engine will be paired to an all-new 5-speed manual gearbox. Two prototypes of the Y9T have been dispatched from Japan late last year, the report adds. The Y9T would have a payload rating of around 800 kg.
