The Mahindra S101 compact SUV was spied undergoing tests in Chennai, by Motorbeam reader, Mr. Prakash. The S101, as our readers are aware by now, is the codename of Mahindra's upcoming entry-level crossover which will rival the Ford EcoSport.
The S101 is built on an all-new monocoque platform. These spy images, just like plenty others we have shown our readers before, reveal that the styling of the crossover is yet to be finished as the test mules here sport dummy headlights and bumpers.
What is for certain is that the S101 will measure under 4 meters in length, and with power coming from a newly-developed sub 1,200 cc petrol engine and sub 1,500 cc diesel engine, the S101 will qualify itself as a small car, thereby attracting lower taxes.
The new petrol engine is likely to be turbocharged, while the diesel motor could be carried over from the Mahindra Quanto. The Quanto uses a 1.5-liter three-cylinder diesel engine with twin-scroll turbocharging developing 100 bhp and 240 Nm of torque.
As for the launch of the S101, Dr. Pawan Goenka, the company's executive director, confirmed that the market introduction of the S101 could take place as early as next year.
