The Hero Leap hybrid scooter which was first showcased at Auto Expo 2012 reappeared at the company's grand unveiling of new products earlier this year. Autocar Professional now learns that the serial hybrid scooter would be launched in India in February 2015.
In an earlier media interaction, Pawan Munjal, CEO and MD, Hero Motocorp, stated that the Leap would initially be launched in international markets like the US and Europe and then brought to India.
According to the report, the scooter would be made at Hero's Gurgaon facility and the company is keeping its expectations low. The annual production volume is estimated to be 6,000 units and this could be increased as per the demand.
The Hero Leap serial hybrid scooter is powered by an electric motor which derives its juice from a Li-ion battery pack. The battery is recharged by a 124 cc petrol engine range extender that generates 11 hp. The scooter can reach a claimed top speed of 100 km/h.
In developed markets like the US and Europe, the Leap would target intra-city commuters with its green credentials. As far as India is concerned, a high fuel economy figure would be its USP.
