The BMW M3 is an icon in its own right and a true driver's car. For the last 27 years, the M3 has been the obvious choice for a performance oriented petrol head on the lookout for something practical and yet fast.

The current M3 is based on the E90 3 Series that BMW replaced with the F30 3 Series recently. As a result, the M3 is due for a major overhaul.

News first broke out a couple of months ago, when Carmagazine.co.uk had published images of the next generation M3 on their cover. The new M3 will feature a lot of CFRP (Carbon fiber reinforced plastic) bits to make sure that it stays as light as possible. The target is actually 1500kg.

Another interesting feature is that the new M3 will have a straight-six engine that will be turbocharged, unlike the current 4.0-liter naturally aspirated V8 motor.

Friedrich Nitschke, Head of BMW M GmbH, has told Car & Driver in an interview that that the current M3 will continue production for about six more months. Both the coupé and the cabriolet will be made. However, all the cars have been sold out.

As a result, if you want a BMW M3, you'll have to wait for the new one or buy a used car.
