The Mahindra XUV500, introduced in September 2011, will undergo its first full model change by the end of 2020, as per a report from Autocar India. The all-new model will employ an all-new 180 hp 2.0-litre diesel engine.

2018 Mahindra XUV500 front
The next-gen Mahindra XUV500 will ride on an all-new platform, which will underpin even a Ford C-SUV.

Originally, the first generation Mahindra XUV500 was powered by a 140 hp 2.2-litre mHawk diesel engine. With its last facelift in 2018, this engine’s maximum power was hiked to 155 hp. The all-new 2.0-litre diesel engine replacing this unit in the second generation model will offer another bump in the maximum power, of 25 hp. Needless to say, this engine will comply with the more stringent BSVI emission norms that become effective in April 2020.

For the design and engineering of the second generation XUV500, Mahindra will likely club the expertise of MNATC (USA), Pininfarina (Italy) and MRV (India). The company will likely make its flagship SUV bigger and roomier, and the third-row seats would benefit the most from improvements.

Like the first generation model, the second generation will have a monocoque construction, but it will sit on a newly developed platform. Ford will use the same for a C-SUV in India, as the C2 platform-based next-gen Kuga/Escape/Endura global C-SUV seems way too expensive in a price-sensitive market.

2018 Mahindra XUV500 profile
The next-gen Mahindra should have a bigger body and a roomier cabin with more space for the third-row passengers.

When the first-gen XUV500 arrived in 2011, it didn't have direct competition, filling out the white space between the Scorpio and the Fortuner. However, by the time the second generation model is here, customers will have several three-row SUV options costing under INR 20 lakh (ex-showroom), including the next-gen Hyundai Creta, the Tata H7X , the MG Hector and the Kia SP2i.
