Autocar India reports that the next-gen Hyundai i20 will be introduced in India in mid-2020. This is in line with a previous report which stated that the new model is due in 2020. The current generation of the B2-segment hatchback has been on sale since 2014 and received a mid-cycle facelift in February 2018. The next generation model should help the company ward off the heat from the Maruti Baleno facelift and the Tata Aquilla premium small car.

The Hyundai Elite i20 was launched in India in August 2014 and received a mid-cycle facelift in February 2018.

The aesthetics of the next-gen Hyundai i20 will follow the company's latest design theme. Its front-end will feature a prominent Cascading grille and Hyundai Composite Light two-tier headlamps. The current i20 has gained a reputation for its feature-laden high-quality interior. The next generation model, in all probability, will offer a longer list of features while maintaining the best-in-segment quality standards.

In August, it emerged that the next-gen Hyundai i20 will feature the 1.0-liter T-GDI three-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine that will make its India debut on the Maruti Vitara Brezza-rivalling QXi (Hyundai Styx). The high-strung motor outputs a maximum power of 120 PS and a peak torque of 171 Nm in the i30. Reportedly, the current 1.2-litre petrol and 1.4-litre diesel engines will be carried over, albeit, in a BSVI-compliant state. The company could offer the SmartAUTO AMT technology, which makes its debut on the new Santro, on the naturally-aspirated petrol variant of the all-new i20.

Before the advent of the next-gen Hyundai i20, HMIL will launch the all-new Grand i10 next year. The launch of the next-gen i10 model will follow the introduction of the aforementioned Vitara Brezza-adversary.

The next-gen Hyundai i20 could be a recipient of the 1.0-litre T-GDI turbocharged petrol engine that was showcased in Auto Expo 2016.

While the Hyundai Elite i20 has been enjoying steady popularity, with monthly sales average of 11,495 units*, it has it has been outsold rather comprehensively by the Maruti Baleno (monthly sales average of 18,660 units*). The next-gen Hyundai i20 will set out to put an end to the best-selling status of its Japanese rival or in the least, close the gap to it.
