In a not so encouraging news for enthusiasts, the next gen BMW 1 Series is reported to be a front-wheel-drive model. The current 1 Series sends power to rear wheels and is widely popular for its driving dynamics, the fate of which now hangs in the balance.
The next gen 1er would be based on BMW Group's new UKL1 FWD modular platform which was debuted in the new range of MINIs. The platform, which is equivalent of VW's MQB, will underpin a number of compact BMWs ranging from hatchbacks, sedans and mini SUVs. The 2 Series Active Tourer which is slated to go on sale later this year will be the first Bimmer to be based on this architecture. The next gen X1 would also adapt UKL1.
As you would guess, the new 1 Series would undergo a complete design revamp gaining the new family look. The stance is expected to be sharper and sportier than the current model whose looks polarize opinions, and will come as a sedan in addition to 3- and 5-door variants.
The next gen 1 Series would be larger than the outgoing version with more emphasis on interior room and boot space. The weight is expected to reduced, despite increased dimensions, by the usage of aluminium in body construction.
It's too early to speculate on the powertrain options but expect three- and four-cylinder petrol and diesel engines, starting with the 1.5L engine from the new Mini. The next gen M1 is speculated to be powered by a twin turbo 2.0-litre petrol motor producing around 360 hp, sending power to all four wheels.
The new BMW 1 Series is expected to arrive in 2018.
