Hyundai expanded the Hyundai i30 range with the addition of the Hyundai i30 Fastback last week. Now, with the idea of an even smaller coupe-styled sedan, IAB's artist Shoeb Kalania has digitally created a 'Hyundai i20 Fastback'.

Application of the coupe design code to other cars of the 'i' family hinges on the response to the i30 Fastback. Hyundai i20 Fastback rendered.

Smaller and sportier than the Hyundai Elantra, the Hyundai i30 Fastback, launching in early 2018, aims to create a new niche segment. Fastback body style, previously reserved to luxury cars, is trending in the mass market segment. The Honda Accord, one of the top-selling mid-size sedans in the U.S., has incorporated a fastback design. Budget brand Tata, to the surprise of many, launched a fastback-like compact sedan (Tata Tigor) this year.

For the third-gen Hyundai i20, Hyundai may consider introducing the Fastback, either discontinuing the 3-door version or running it alongside. In India, where Hyundai ranks second in domestic sales, there isn't enough leeway between the Hyundai Xcent which is priced from at INR 5.33 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi) and the Hyundai Verna which starts at INR 7.84 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi). Moreover, a sub-4 metre body length is a must to keep Verna customers from downgrading, a challenge with the i20's body. Lastly, the Fastback's characteristic lowered chassis and stiffer suspension setup may not be practical for India.

Currently Hyundai is working on a mid-cycle refresh for the second generation Hyundai i20. The facelifted i20 is expected to go on sale next year, with rumours pointing at an Auto Expo 2018 debut.
