Tata Nano could spawn electric, hybrid & air-powered variants - Report
Aravind Jayachandran, It goes without saying that I'm a huge petrolhead and can apparently convert all my driving emotions into words you can read.
The Tata Nano could be given a rebirth under the new leadership.
Hindustan Times is speculating that under the leadership of Tata Motors' new chairman N. Chandrasekaran, the Tata Nano will continue in the market for the foreseeable future, even spawning new variants.
The ousted Tata Sons chairman, Cyrus Mistry, expressed wishes to discontinue the slow-selling Tata Nano altogether due to accumulated losses (cumulatively valued at INR 6,400 crore).
Earlier this decade, the R&D team were rumoured to be working on new variants of the Nano, featuring hybrid, full electric and even compressed air propulsion, although Mr Mistry shelved the projects, citing "no profitability". Under Mr Chandrasekaran, however, some of the shelved projects might be revived and meet a production line, says Hindustan Times.
Last year Tata Motors was seen testing a comprehensive facelift for the Nano (codenamed Tata Pelican), which features new headlights, redesigned bumpers, larger 13-inch wheels, redesigned hood, a repositioned fuel filler inlet, washer for the front windshield, a bigger engine and completely overhauled interior with features borrowed from Tiago.
