Will be based on the new CLAR platform.
Nearly 4 years after the current BMW 5 Series came out, the German manufacturer will be replacing it with the next generation 2017 BMW 5 Series model, which is expected to debut in H2 2016.
Based on spyshots and the exterior of the new 7 Series, RM Car Design has come up with a new rendering of the mid-size luxury sedan. The rendering combines the sharp features of the 3 Series with the discrete looks of the new 7 Series. Exterior features could include optional Laser headlamps, larger BMW kidney grilles, LED taillamps, larger exhaust tips, and more chrome treatment.
The 2017 BMW 5 Series will ride on the CLAR platform sourced from the 2016 BMW 7 Series, and could be the first mass-produced mid-size sedan to feature carbon fiber construction in some portions of its body for lighter weight and better strength.
Although engine lineup has not been confirmed, the new 5 Series could offer a fuel efficient range of four cylinder petrol and diesel engines, and straight-six twin-turbo options. As for the next generation BMW M5, it is expected to output over 600 hp from a V8 engine. A plug-in hybrid eDrive variant with a 4- or 3-cylinder engine paired to an electric motor(s) is also in the cards.
Like the current model, the 2017 BMW 5 Series will also be offered as a Touring (estate) and Gran Turismo bodystyles. BMW has stated that a certain extent of the next gen 5 Series production will be outsourced to Magna Steyr's plant in Austria.
