Based on the A4’s MLB Evo platform.
Based on teaser images released yesterday, Indian Autos Blog’s Shoeb Kalania has created a digital mockup of the 2017 Audi Q5‘s front fascia. The second-generation Audi Q5 will have its premiere in the coming days, and its public debut is set for the 2016 Paris Motor Show which opens its doors for the media on September 29.
Featuring an evolutionary styling, the 2017 Audi Q5 gets the trademark Singleframe grille, redesigned LED daytime running lights and Matrix LED headlights. With the next-gen Q5, LED lighting technology will likely be a standard fitment with the top-end variants getting the more advanced Matrix lighting technology.
Underneath will be a new platform, the MLB Evo, which underpins the 2016 Audi A4, which went on sale in India this month. With high tensile steel in its construction, the new Q5 is reported to shed around 100 kg, thereby reducing fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.
The new Q5 also borrows its engine lineup from the new A4. Popular engine choices will include the 2.0-liter four-cylinder TDI, 3.0-liter V6 TDI and 1.8-liter four-cylinder TFSI among other choices. On the transmission front, expect 6-speed manual and 7-speed S-Tronic units, though the more modern 8-speed tiptronic could also find a place in a few variants.
Production of the 2017 Audi Q5 will start this year at Audi’s new plant in San Jose Chiapa in Mexico. Next year, Audi India will launch the new Q5 by assembling CKD kits at its Aurangabad facility. Rivals for the popular Q5 include the Mercedes GLC, BMW X3, Land Rover Discovery Sport and the Volvo XC60.
