New engine said to debut in the facelifted VW Golf Mk7.

As reported earlier this year, Volkswagen has announced a new 1.5-litre engine. It’s a TSI turbocharged four-cylinder petrol unit dubbed EA211 TSI evo. Volkswagen presented the new engine at the 37th International Vienna Motor Symposium held in Austria last week. The new TSI motor will become available to customers in late-2016, with outputs of 96 kW (129 hp) and 110 kW (147 hp) initially. The company is silent on which model(s) will get the new 1.5L engine first, but as per the aforementioned report, it will be the facelifted VW Golf Mk7.

The VW EA211 evo engine will become available for customers in first model(s) in late 2016.

The EA211 TSI evo is up to 10% more efficient than the previous 1.4-litre TSI (92 kW). The efficiency improvements are seen across a wide range of the engine map. To put that in perspective, the efficiency improvements won’t be just agency test derived results on paper, they’ll actually be seen by customers in their daily driving conditions, according to VW. The maximum torque is available right from 1,300 rpm, while the fuel consumption has been reduced by up to 1 litre over 100 km.

The TSI evo is the world’s first mass market petrol engine to use an exhaust gas-driven turbocharger with electrically actuated Variable Turbine Geometry (VTG). Other highlights of the new engine include Miller combustion cycle with a high compression ratio of 12.5:1, fourth-generation direct-injection system with the injection pressure increased to 350 bar, cylinder deactivation and atmospheric plasma spray-coating for the cylinder walls which helps reducing the friction.
