Likely to premiere at this year's Frankfurt Motor Show.
Indian Autos Blog reader, Mr. Max from the UrbanSupercars, snapped the next generation 2016 BMW 7 Series on test near Stuttgart, Germany. The new 7 Series, codenamed G11 (G12 for the long-wheelbase version), is expected to be unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September this year.
Engineers are reported to have made the luxury sedan lighter by 170 kg thanks to extensive use of carbon fiber in the construction of key components. The 2016 7-er is based on a new rear-wheel drive platform called 35up, which will also be the donor platform for the next generation 5 and 6 Series, and the flagship X7 SUV.
While the 7 Series will continue to be offered with six- and eight-cylinder petrol and diesel engines, reports indicate that BMW will offer an entry-level 2.0-liter twin-turbocharged four-cylinder engine for luxury-demanding customers on a budget. The flagship 6.6-liter V12 could be axed due to Europe's stringent emission regulations.
Among the list of standard and optional features are a few that have really stood out in media reports: The reported leather engine cover for example, and the 'Sky Lounge' which involves fitment of a full glass roof. Aside from these, the new 7 Series would be equipped with laser headlights and a new generation of BMW's iDrive multimedia interface.
