The 2016 Porsche Panamera has been spied testing ahead of its world debut next year, courtesy of auto.ifeng.com. With the 2016 model year, the sports saloon will be entering its second generation.
Speaking to Indian Autos Blog at the Volkswagen Group Night on the eve of 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show (2015 IAA), current Volkswagen Group CEO Matthias Muller who was earlier CEO and President of Porsche, had confirmed that the all-new Panamera will have its world debut at the 2016 Geneva Motor Show in March.
The second generation Porsche Panamera (codename: G2) will be based on the VW Group’s new front-engine, rear-drive platform called MSB or Modularer Standardantrieb-Baukasten. With the new platform and other weight reduction measures, the all-new model could be 90 kg lighter compared to the current model. Cosmetically though, it isn’t expected to be a radical redesign.
“It is more or less the same design language, you’ll recognize him as a Panamera..it’ll be of a better package, and some details will be more modern of course,” Mr. Muller said in an interview at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show. He also suggested that the next-gen Panamera should go on sale by H2 2016. Major markets outside Europe should get the all-new model by 2017.
The 2016 Porsche Panamera will likely be offered with newly-developed turbocharged V6 and V8 engines, as well as the plug-in hybrid powertrain. Transmission choices should include a 7-speed PDK or an 8-speed Tiptronic S.
