Are you the next generation Honda City?

Nithyanandh K, As a toddler, those wheeled machinery fascinated me even before I knew what they’re called as! So here I'm, petrolhead by birth, Mechanical engineer by qualification and automotive reporter by profession!

A Chinese website has spotted a test mule of what they believe to be the next generation Honda City.

The Chinese market is increasingly becoming the epicenter of auto industry and it’s pretty natural for a manufacturer to get most of the inputs for a new car from China. That explains why the test mule was caught testing in China. If you remember, Nissan held the world premiere of the Sunny in China and designed its Honda City slayer with plenty of Chinese inputs.

Auto.sohu.com spotted the heavily disguised mule and is convinced that it’s the next generation Honda City. Going by the trapezoidal air dam and the shape of the front grill and headlamps, we think so too.

Honda has shown and launched the generation Civic and Accord and we can identify them even if they are parked behind a wall. Adding to that, the City has a shorter lifecycle compared to most other Honda products. The last two generations have not lasted more than 6 years.

The design features are unclear since the test mule was wearing thick disguise, but the car has grown in dimensions. The headlamps get projector HID bulbs and the foglamps stay circular.

The rear of the car is completely different and the large wrap around tail lamps extend to the boot lid. The elements of the tail lamps get LED treatment.

The wheels of the car now get five fasteners instead of four used in current city suggesting that the car is equipping itself for a step up in the power output. The car is expected to be significantly larger, hence it’s an all new model rather than an extensive facelift.

The next gen Honda City is expected to use the same 1.5 litre petrol engine but the biggest news for India is that it’ll indeed have a diesel option. The 1.5 litre i-DTEC Earth Dreams diesel motor which will make its debut in the Honda Brio Amaze sedan will be offered in the Honda City as well but most likely in a higher state of tune.

Honda City is a very popular car in India and the lack of diesel is the sole reason for its poor performance in the recent times. With the next gen City, Honda will be looking to resurrect the nameplate in India and redeem its leadership position.
