Exports of the Yamaha YZF-R25 from the Indonesian plant is postponed until next year as initial local demand surpassed the company's estimates.
This was revealed by Yamaha Indonesia's executive director Dyonisius Beti to Indonesian web portal Kompas Otomotif.
Within 25 hours of its launch on May 20, the Yamaha R25 had attracted 2,800 bookings in Indonesia. This was almost a fourth of the first year sales target of 12,000 units, announced at the launch press meet.
In the next phase, the plant would make 2,000 units a month and earmark 1,000 units for exports. The subsidiary may look to export motorcycles from other classes in the future.
Beti said the Indonesia-made R25 can meet global standards and is 94 percent localized. He said the plant, located in East Jakarta, would become a global export base and can export to developed and developing countries. A major export market would be Japan.
Revealed as a concept at the Tokyo Motor Show last year, the production Yamaha R25 is powered by an 8-valve DOHC, fuel-injected, parallel-twin 250 cc engine that develops 36 PS @ 12,000 rpm and 22.1 Nm of torque @ 10,000 rpm, pairing to a 6-speed gearbox.
Sales of the R25 begins in July.
