Ask the Bolero owner in your locality how his vehicle performs and he would go on talking about the rugged work horse which can handle harsh terrains and potholes with little fuss. It is a utility vehicle but some how most of us can't look at it as a SUV, can we?
The Scorpio and Safari are Indian SUVs which are far more superior in shape, styling, interior quality compared to the Bolero. Then comes the engine. The 2.2 CRDI unit on both the SUVs offer far more superior levels of NVH, which the Bolero lacks. Or lacked. The all new Bolero VLX CRDe variant has come out, and boy oh boy we have been waiting for this to happen.
The VLX comes with a substantially more powerful 2.49L CRDe diesel engine producing 97 Bhp and 255 Nm torque available from 1800-2200 rpm,as opposed to the older models which produce a meager 63 Bhp and 180 Nm torque.
Apart from the engine, M&M has blessed it with new dual tone interiors, which it says would add character to the tough workhorse. Exterior looks remain the same except for those big-sized decals along the doors and CRDe badge on the front fender. Mahindra also mentions that the brakes have been enhanced, but without a test drive we really can't judge what it is. The front suspension has apparantly had some changes and that along with the NGT 530R transmission takes the Bolero closer to being a SUV than ever before.
“The Bolero VLX offers a quantum leap in power and performance due to an Electronic Computer Controlled engine management system. It also offers a superior driving experience and an advanced level of refinement with reduced NVH (Noise, Vibration and Harshness) levels. This rugged, yet stylish SUV has enough power to whip up a storm and is ideal for the young, urban customer who takes to the city and the open road with equal ease,” said Dr. Pawan Goenka, President, Automotive Sector, Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd.
The Bolero VLX CRDe is priced at Rs. 6.9 lakhs (ex-showroom Jaipur).
Special Edition:
The company has also launched a Special Edition, which comes in two exquisite colours: Mist Silver and Golden Sahara Beige. Part of the treatment is the european leather upholstery and a CD/MP3 player.
The special edition is priced at Rs. 6.49 Lakhs (Ex-Showrrom) Jaipur.
What we think- The New Bolero is all set for a new lease of life, waiting to spell a change. We guess the 2.2 DICOR unit from Tata will naturally find its new home under the Sumo or the Spacio's hood in no time. The Bolero is India's best selling UV and VLX CRDe should further strengthen its position in the market.
