CBU or CKD? It is too early to decipher Maruti Suzuki's plans for Kizashi in India
One of our favorite picks - DWS, is reporting that Suzuki will launch the Kizashi in India during the Auto Expo in January next year. The Kizashi was launched in Japan a couple of days back and its international debut was conducted in the US back in July.
There is no clarity on the versions that will be offered in India. DWS says a 6-speed manual transmission will be launched next year with front wheel drive.
The 2400cc petrol engine on the Kizashi makes 185 horsepower and 170 ft-lbs of torque. EBD and ABS are standard. Initial test drive reports are positive and say the car can handle corners well.
There are a total of eight airbags in the Kizashi which should keep it on par on safety with some of the major players. Air conditioning vents are provided at the rear. Push start button and keyless entry are only a few fancy features on this Suzuki.
The steering wheel is tilt/telescopic adjustable, and holds audio controls. 10-way adjustable driver’s seat with three memory presets are offered. The car should come with a 17 or 18-inch alloy wheel.
What are the Kizashi's chances in India?
The question that arises immediately is how Maruti is going to be victorious in marketing this high-end sedan. It's known for its economical hatchbacks in India. The price of the Kizashi is around 12 lakh rupees in the US.
Whether Suzuki can pull it off in the D-Segment remains to be seen. We are skeptical of Suzuki's chances in the territory that truly belongs to the Hondas, Toyotas and Skodas. Suzuki in India is a small and fuel-efficient car manufacturer. Vehicles like the Baleno, Grand Vitara should have taught them a lesson or two. Hopefully, they will put them into the effort that goes into selling the Kizashi locally.
We'll get to hear more on the Kizashi as we draw closer to the Auto Expo.
