A report from Automotive News suggests that Mercedes-Benz is considering a coupe-shaped crossover on its entry-level Mercedes GLA Class. The publication spoke to Mercedes's R&D head, Thomas Weber, who said a couple-like GLA is possible in the future.
Earlier this month at its annual shareholders meeting, Mercedes announced that it will launch 12 all-new cars (cars without any predecessors) by 2020. A GLA coupe could very well be among these twelve cars planned for this decade.
However, Weber confirmed that the company's focus right now was on getting the Concept Coupe SUV, revealed at the Beijing Motor Show last week, production ready. The Concept Coupe SUV previews Mercedes's first ever SUV with coupe-like styling and will rival the BMW X6, the car which started this trend. Earlier this week, the production version of the Concept Coupe SUV was caught on test, hinting that a market launch will take place next year.
The GLA is Mercedes's entry-level crossover which went on sale in Germany last month. Rivaling the Audi Q3 and BMW X1, the GLA is expected in Indian showrooms either this year or in early 2015. The crossover had its Indian showcasing in February this year at the Auto Expo.
