Lightest engine in its class.
The forthcoming Maruti Celerio diesel debuts Suzuki's self-developed diesel engine, a two-cylinder unit displacing 793cc. With this engine, the Celerio will become India's most fuel efficient diesel car when it launches on June 3, 2015 with an ARAI-rated efficiency of 27.62 km/l.
However, analysts are skeptical about the performance of this engine. While it produces 47 bhp at 3,500 rpm and 125 Nm of torque at 2,000 rpm, its competitors (Chevrolet Beat diesel and Hyundai Grand i10 diesel) put out higher figures thanks to their larger, three-cylinder units.
These presentation slides, reportedly from an executive training, throw better light on the Celerio's new diesel engine though. Despite its 125 Nm of torque, Maruti says its diesel engine has higher torque/cc than the Fiat-sourced 1.3-liter MultiJet diesel engine which currently powers other Maruti offerings such as the Swift and Ritz.
The all-aluminium diesel engine in the Celerio is also the lightest in its class at a mere 89 kg, while the MultiJet comes at 128 kg and the 1.1-liter Hyundai U2 CRDi weighs 151 kg. Standard features on the Celerio diesel will include a hydraulic clutch and a new 5-speed manual transmission with low mechanical losses.

Similar to the Celerio petrol, the Celerio diesel will come in four variants - LDi, VDi, ZDi and ZDi (O). ABS, EBD and dual front airbags are reserved for the top-end model, as is a driver-seat height adjuster.
Rivals: Hyundai Grand i10, Chevrolet Beat Diesel
Expected Price: INR 4.6-5.7 Lakhs.
Tentative Launch Date: June 3, 2015 (reported)
