Mahindra's second monocoque frame vehicle.
MotorOctane claims that the Mahindra S101 (internal codename) will be called the Mahindra KUV100 when it launches in the market in the coming months.
To be launched this year, the Mahindra KUV100 is confirmed to get a new 1.2-liter petrol engine co-developed with Ssangyong. The diesel option would likely use the mHawk80 1.5-liter three-cylinder diesel engine that launched on the TUV300 this month. A five-speed transmission would be standard, whereas an AMT would be optional, show spyshots.
It isn't clear what the 'K' implies - it could be 'Krossover' speculates MotorOctane. Other alpha numeric names from Mahindra are the XUV500 and the TUV300, where the 'X' stands for 'Generation X' and the 'T' stands for 'Tough.'
Mahindra is understood to be working out a very aggressive price for the KUV100. It could be positioned as an alternative to tall-boy hatchbacks, taking on the likes of the Maruti Wagon R and the Chevrolet Beat. The S101 is also likely to have been designed with inputs from Italian design house Pininfarina, and like other Mahindras could offer ABS and Airbags in every variant as an option.
Mahindra's executive director and president of the Automotive and Farm Equipment Sector, Dr. Pawan Goenka, said last week that the S101 and the TUV300 would be completely different products with different target customers.
