Most extreme hatchback from Honda.
After two concepts and endless teasing, Honda has finally unveiled the highly anticipated Honda Civic Type R at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show.
Targeting hot hatchbacks like the Renault Megane RS Trophy and the Seat Leon Cupra 280, the new Civic Type R aims to redefine benchmarks of FWD hot hatchbacks, just like its predecessor did. Up front is an aggressive bumper that integrates a mean front splitter and houses large air intakes with fog lamps.
Characteristic of a Type R model is the red Honda badge, nestled in the black mesh grille flanked by dagger-like headlamps with LED DRLs.
The low ride height and the flaring wheel arches contribute to the dynamic appeal of Honda's most extreme product. Deep, blackened side skirts and large 18-inch alloy rims wrapped in low profile tires further emphasizes the performance it is capable of.
At the back sits the most distinctive feature of the exterior - a large two part rear wing. Other highlights include an aggressive diffuser package surrounding a quartet of large exhaust tailpipes. However, it doesn't feature the cool "Devil's horns" LED taillight strips seen in the concepts that preceded it.
Honda have put together an interior that complements its sporting characteristics. It features a sports steering wheel with red highlights, Type R bucket seats, contrast red stitching and Alcantara upholstery. The instrument dials continues the red theme, with a central rev counter and a digital speedometer above it.
Underneath the hood is a brand-new 2.0-liter turbocharged VTEC engine that produces 310 PS at 6,500 rpm, and peak torque is 400 Nm at 2,500 rpm. Output is routed through a six-speed manual transmission to the front wheels.
With the powerful engine, and increased aerodynamic focus, the Type R is capable of hitting 0-to-100 km/h in just 5.7 seconds, before reaching a top speed of around 270 km/h. Stopping power comes from a set of Brembo brakes that use four-piston calipers and 350 mm drilled discs for the front axle.
