Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India Ltd. plans to wrap up the regional launches of the Cliq by the end of September 2017. This information was revealed by Mr. Yadvinder Singh Guleria, Senior Vice President – Sales & Marketing, HMSI, to Autocar Professional. After launching it in Rajasthan and Maharashtra, Honda will now launch the Cliq in Tamil Nadu in the coming days.
HMSI currently commands 60% share in the domestic scooter market. However, in rural markets, the penetration of scooters has been slow. One of the major reasons for that is the cost of motorcycles, which at a weighted average of INR 45,000, is lower than that of Scooters which stands at INR 48,000. Also, the smaller size of wheels restricts the use of scooters in rural areas with limited infrastructure. Another challenge is the mindset of the people as anything automatic is perceived as expensive.
At INR 41,784 (ex-showroom Jaipur), Honda has managed to price the Cliq under the weighted average price of motorcycles thanks to benefits of large economies of scale. IAB spoke to Honda dealers in Rajasthan who reveal that the Cliq is selling around 50-55 units in the state each day.
The Honda Cliq is powered by the tried and tested 109.19 cc air cooled engine that outputs 8 bhp @ 7,000 rpm and 8.94 Nm @ 5,500 rpm. It features an analogue meter console with a speedometer, odometer and fuel gauge. There is 14 L of under seat storage space on offer with a USB charging point.
